Finding God's Gifts

This summer, I grieved the loss of a beautiful natural trail that meandered through the woods and circled a huge lake near my house. The city decided to widen and pave it. In protest, I stopped walking the trail.
But the only person this protest affected was me. I missed walking and being outdoors in God's creation. So I swallowed my pride and took a stroll.
As soon as I stepped on the cleared and paved path, my soul longed for the former rough trail— the abundant shade, exposed tree roots, and jutting rocks. But I kept walking and found some gifts along the way:
glimpses of leaf-dappled sunlight reflecting on the path
blue butterfly stopping to rest, gently opening her wings
promises of cool shade just ahead
million-dollar views, still as breathtaking as ever
I often resist change.
I like the familiar.
I yearn for the original

But I’m trying to develop the discipline of eucharistic thanksgiving—the practice of giving thanks in all situations (1 Thes. 5:8) and to remember “every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights” James 1:17 NIV).
Ann Voskamp’s One Thousand Gifts inspired me to do this. If you haven’t read this bestselling book, I highly recommend it.
So I began my walk with the intent to pay attention and discover those small gifts from God I often overlook in my hurried life. I didn't have to look long or hard. One after the other, they appeared, and by the time I reached the bench facing the lake, I had collected a handful.

Not only is change inevitable, it can often be a good thing. Sometimes change means holding space for what's been lost while also finding the beauty in what’s new.
I sat for a few minutes and drank in the peaceful scene, noticing the flecks of light twinkling across the water. Uplifted and refreshed, I turned toward the trail, eager to find more of God's precious gifts.
